Yooo these rules were dope! Luckily I have a pretty decent Beatles vinyl collection, so I pulled all my samples from those.

Main sample loop & vocal chant is from the song "Anna" off introducing the beatles

Layered in an additional snare from "Flying" off of magical mystery tour

Dat hammer from Maxwell's silver hammer

Small scratch of octopuses garden

Vinyl pop from one of them....

Also have a version with a dope guest verse over top that Imma post as a non entry  tomorrow.

First of all, congrats to Fatvon (not Jay, my bad) for the win last week and thank you Joa for the challenge. Before this one, I had little to no idea about the Beatles (besides of their hall of fame status and crazy effect on women back then).

So, I've spent two full days of Beatl'ing around, listening to tracks and interviews and whatnot, it's been.. an interesting journey. XD

I tried like five or six different takes before I had something that I liked. Then I was like "ah, maybe I wanna give it a super Beatle-y touch with those crunchy guitars and super mellow guy-singing" but unfortunately started to run out of time so had to decide on going with something different. So even though it doesn't sound one bit Beatle-ish, every element in there is 100% Beatles. No outside anything (thumbs up).

Here's my list:

- Drums:

  • Basskick: Lucy in the sky with diamonds
  • Basskick: I've got a feeling
  • Those toms/basskicks (du-du-du-du-du...) and ;
  • the drum rolls came from an Abbey Road Drum solo (unkown track)
  • hi-hat: Sgt. Pepper lonely hearts' club band
  • snare and snare roll: Rain (but messed with the decay and added some synthetic reverb because I needed more of tsjk instead of a puhhhhh, I know you get it).

- Randoms:

  • a bass strum from Sgt. Pepper lonely hearts' club band
  • Vocals of various interviews, random takes and live TV show performance  off of Youtube

- Leads:

  • that wavy pad sound is a sample of "Lose that girl", continuously looping 0.09 seconds with a high cut filter and some extra EQ on it
  • the "OH!' from "Oh! Darling"
  • that "westcoast" lead "synth" is like the overdrive of one of the guitars between two sequences, same technique as the first point AND turned it from polyphonic to monophonic (legato with a little glide for a smoother transition between notes).. but didn't write down of which actual track..

- Bass:

  • same millisecond-loop stuff on a baseline from "I want you", cutting away all the high end and making it sound "round"

- Outro:

  • two short samples from "Helter Skelter"

Peace brothers and sisters.

OK... I appreciate how a bunch of y'all shared your nitty gritties, so here goes.

I took a bass note and a piano loop from You Never Give Me Your Money. For percussion I used a break from Sgt. Pepper, a drum fill from Tell Me Why, and drum sounds from Savoy Truffle, Across The Universe, Yer Blues, and Please Mister Postman. There's a sitar from Across The Universe and strings from I Am The Walrus. A vocal thing (in reverse) came from What You're Doing, and a riser used a sound from Anna. Lastly, I resampled 18 of the tracks I used being played at the same time and made something resembling a riser with that. The end result is a bit different from the stuff I usually do, and I hope you enjoy! PEACE!

Sick Challenge Joa, Congratz FVF!

Met up with Xavier (s/o) who is an expert on Beatles music listened and searched for tunes we could use for drums first . Once we had a drum set together we switched focus to special soundscapes and loops and started playing around. Thankfully Beatles records were hard-panned quite often, so we could isolate a lot of sounds by panning or just using mids/sides.

We tried to turn the Beatles into something entirely different (boom bap-ish, as requested) as best as we could.

I did not flip the hell out of that last part (I loved the Idea, but way too easy) as the Beastie Boys already made the best out of that sample imo.

Below you can find the sources, hope I didn’t forget anything :)

enjoy

DRUMS
Kick
The End (0:27), What You’re Doing (0:04)
Snares
Free As a Bird (0:00), Two of Us (1:31)
Crash
Heater Skelter (4:20+)
Hihat
Mister Please (0:00)
Tom
The End (0:09)
Shaker
You Know My Name (Look Up the Number) (2:32) pitched
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (0:04)
Bongo
You Know My Name (Look Up the Number) (3:00)

Vocalshots
You Know My Name (Look Up the Number) end
A Day In A Life (2:55)

„SYNTHS“&Samples (Synths = chromatically pitched samples)
Hook Synth
A Day in  A Life (2:16)

Plucked Flute Synth
You Know My Name (Look Up the Number) (3:05)
Sie Liebt Dich (in the end somewhere)

Hook Sample 2
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (start) looped and panned

Lead Synth & Intro
Sun King (0:53)

Bridge Swells
The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill (somewhere at start)

2nd Chorus Synth
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds (0:01)

„BASS“ Samples (sometimes filtered, sometimes not)
A Day in A Life 2:16, pitched low
You Know My Name (Look Up the Number) (~3:00)
A Day In A Life (start)

Brass Swells
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1:13)

The hardest challenge for me was to get the bass with at least some nice overtones working (did not want to filter too much)..

Until veeeeery late in the battle I only used the various versions (masters) but then I remembered.
… had some Beatles-.mogg files on the hard drive. Extracted The Bass and Vocal Track in 1 frickin' minute…. the time I spent looking for solo bass hits… not even talking about the drums.
(oh damn, all could have been much easier.)
We only used this approach for the chorus bassline (A Day In A Life, beginning) & Bridge Vocals (same, 2:55+)
