used to play a lot. It's so non-recreational though I could never keep it up. As in you need to play and study the game everyday otherwise you become a weaker a player. Similar to street fighter and smash brothers haha :P

I've been reading logical chess move by move for the last month. Bought a check book size board to follow along. Been playing like six matches a day and doing puzzles. Don't know why I've just fallen off the deep end into the chess nerd abyss

get on Jin (I think it's still called that) it's what all the pr0s play online. Match making scales with your elo rank.

Also there's now chess streamers on twitch. Haven't watched any but I'm sure they give out good commentary advice.

I once watched a documentary on chess. I don't recall its name (I watched it on Netlix a while ago) but I know it was a man vs. machine kind of thing and featured some chess-playing computer called 'Deep Blue' . . . something like that. I find the game and associated culture fascinating but like some who've posted on this topic, I'm more intimidated by the commitment that it would require to perform at a high level than moved by my curiosity.

it's not that complicated, you want your pawns to control the center (until hypermodern chess, where guys started to fianchetto bishops and shit to play into guys always attacking the center with pawns).

That said, if you're going to attack the center with pawns, then the move that makes most logical sense is 1. e4 because it opens the white bishop and the Queen, whereas 1. d5 only opens the black bishop. Bobby Fischer only played 1. e4, except I think versus Spassky in the 70s World Championship in Iceland he busted out a 1. d4 because why wouldn't he.

Then black is basically spending 90% of his time preparing for two moves. Playing 1...e5 (king's pawn game) is common and symmetrical. But I'm pretty sure the game with the best winning odds for black is 1...c5 the asymmetrical Sicilian Defense.

My deal with chess vs RAD Soliders (it literally is my chess now) is that chess, while great, like it's a fucking genius game that is super rewarding etc, still can be a bit bland. RAD Soldiers, yes, I am hyping a nerdy, geeky video game, is graphically more interesting. Players moves include weapons etc.

Consider it more like the chess the play on the Milenium Falcon.

I bought a little portable chess board last year. I actually got a lot of my co-workers into playing. That was a lot of fun playing 3 or 4 games during work, legitimate bets, shit talk, people getting pissed off lol.

Probably only played a couple games this whole year. I surely have gotten weak.
