Haha I almost picked up Hidden Fortress as well. I always get carried away with the Criterion sales. I think there's two a year at BN. So the next one will probably be around November/December. Gonna start saving now lol.

pretty sure Hidden Fortress was my introduction to Kurosawa, so it was time to own it. I house sat for a guy that had a deep, deep Criterion collection, so I got to watch a metric shit ton of great films over that summer.

I guess I should set some cash aside as well!

just finished watching The Bling Ring...holy shit, that's a good film. it's everything i was hoping Spring Breakers would be, without all the pretentiousness and needless experimentation of Harmony Korine.

Emma Watson gave a fucking brilliant performance as Nicki, and i really dug the overall tone of the writing...it really did a great job of satirizing today's celebrity-obsessed culture, i don't understand why it wasn't nominated for anything when even Franco got a semi-ironic nomination for his character in SB. idk, but this one's wayyyyy better imo.

I thought Spring Breakers was a masterpiece but I noticed you either love or hate that movie...

The Usual Suspects is probably the greatest movie ever to me. Fucks with my mind every time i watch it. I like most of Judd Apatow's stuff to, especially the stuff with Rogen. Kids is a great movie, i would love to see more movies like that.

Usual Suspects is, in my book, one of the best ever...

I like Sofia Coppala movies. She tends to have a very real pace to them. Not too flashy, almost subdued and quiet spin am any respects. I find them to be very easy to digest.

New school:

John Hillcoat (Aussie director who did The Proposition, The Road, Lawless)

James Gray (The Yards, We Own The Night, The Immigrant)

Tarsem Singh (The Cell, The Fall, Immortals)

David Gordon Green (Undertow, Snow Angels, Joe)

Steve McQueen (Hunger, Shame, 12 Years A Slave)

Love the proposition. One of those movies I zoned out and forgot about reality until it was over. Great movie.

Sin City? More like Seen Titty! As in, I seen Eva Green's titty every five minutes. Good times.

It was on par with the original, solid stories, wild rides.

anybody see Jodorowsky's Dune?

it's such a fucking good film, just saw it Tuesday and got super inspired by it.

for that matter, is anyone here familiar with Jodorowsky's works?

i'm gearing up to watch all ~3-4 of his films next week...

Really want to see that doc. I've only seen Santa Sangre by him. But I must say... It's one of hell of a ride. I've found it extremely difficult to find his films. Hopefully Netflix or Hulu will get more of his shit in the future. How are you checking them out?

i'm a film school student, and also his films are publicly available for check-out at my school's library...or at least The Holy Mountain is, not sure about the rest of his collection.

Holy Mountain is a masterpiece. By far his best film imo.

El Topo and Santa Sangre are also worth checking out.

now what year did Sangre come out, cause that's the one film they didn't discuss at all in that film...

also, anyone see the new film by Jodorowsky, his first in 20+ years, yet?

It came out in '89, not sure why they didn't talk about it.

...and yes, I've been dying to get my hands on his latest film, The Dance Of Reality.

oh, okay, i think i can see why...the whole film is basically telling the story of his failed adaptation of Dune, which was being worked on in the mid-70s...so in diegetic terms, the film didn't really need to talk about anything after that because it would've just been confusing and irrelevant to the rest of the narrative they were building upon.

speaking of which, that version of Dune would've been fucking amazing ... like on the same level as Star Wars. Salvador Dali, Orsen Welles, David Carradine, Mick Jagger lol? Magma and Pink Floyd working on the score, H.R. Giger and Moebius designing sets...i wonder what that alternate universe is like where that film did get made, and not haphazardly handed off to David Lynch with like ~10% creative control and no executive power whatsoever.

The Wolf Of Wall Street was great. A bit long and I thought lost its legs towards the end, chop 40 minutes off it, but the story would have been a incomplete. So give and take I guess, but overall, amazing.
