fair enough, here was my thought process on this: the word 'sample' for me usually means material taken from other songs so that's what it means here. no sampling from other songs/recordings allowed. i guess i hadn't considered the possibility of sample packs, or pre-made loops & whatnot since i personally don't use them. In regards to CTRL x SKILLZ response, you're right, the difference in the final product would likely be impossible to tell. So here's what I'll say: things like - "Superdope Hip Hop Piano Chords Sample Pack Vol.XX" are frowned upon but not illegal . I encourage the use of any and all outboard gear, instruments, soft synths, etc. that you may have at your disposal. I understand that 'no outside anything' type rules are more challenging in a sense, but this week I wanted to give people the opportunity to flex their instrument chops
  3. STBB behind the beat/Weekly winner interview

ok here goes 1. Wanna tell us something about yourself? I live & make hip hop in Austin, TX. Part of a collective called Hermit Kingdom. I make beats & videos, record artists at my home studio, and perform with HK. 2. How did you make use of the sample? I processed the sines with various effects from the SP404SX, then dropped em into Ableton Sampler, beefed up with a touch of saturation/overdrive & played them with my midi keyboard. as for the drums~ Kick - low sine with quick attack & release + overdrive for punch Snare - my 1 outside drum sample tee hee hats - pink noise pitched waay up, highpassed, with 0 attack & quick release. shaker - same as hats but with a medium attack percussion - the open drums from one of the provided samples, with HPF & reverb. the other 'non-synthesized' drum sound 3. How did you incorporate the rules? I wanted the basis of the track to be purely crafted from the sine & noise tones. acapella & use of the non-synth samples were for textural layers. 4. How did you go about making the drums and drum programming? see #2 for drum sound design. i almost always record drums by playing em live on pads, and making slight timing adjustments in midi afterwards as needed to achieve that neck-snapping swing 5. What DAW and or equipment did you use? ABLETON ARMY REPRESENT WOOP WOOP ~ i also have an SP404SX routed thru my interface, which I use extensively as an external effect within Ableton. Oh and a launchpad pro which is basically an extension of my arm at this point 6. Anything else you wanna add? just that these battles are always a super fun creative exercise and a great excuse to flex my technique

good question i'll edit the rules to clarify: no outside melodic samples, meaning acapella samples, drum kits, & one-shot fx samples are fair game.
